Online Training: Good for Your Brain

Hello readers, those of you who have followed our monthly newsletter will find this post similar as it is based off a section from our October distribution. The topic greatly interests me so I wanted to touch on it more.

I came across an article on FoxNews.com discussing an experiment performed at UCLA on the effects of a web search in adults aged 55-78 most of whom had little to no internet experience. The results found were fascinating - brain activity was actually improved after performing web searches daily for one week. Specifically a portion of the brain that influences working memory and decision-making skills showed improved action. Dr. Teena D. Moody, the study’s author, described how it appears that some online training in older adults could be a beneficial brain exercise to help enhance cognition.

After finding such positive results, efforts are being made to see the effect that online searches can have on younger generations.

So how does this tie into online training? One of the major reasons we come across against online training is that it is more appropriate for a younger generation. Certain companies with older employees feel they have no reason to make the switch when their personnel is more comfortable with an in person orientation. However this study has shown that having employees do exercises online (like training!) is actually beneficial to the cognitive functioning of the brain. Perhaps older employees don’t prefer the internet, but having them go through a one-time online training could help increase the functioning of their brain and improve their overall work performance.

We’ve already discussed some of the benefits to an online training solution (save time and money, 24/7 access, etc.) but this study has brought forth one benefit that is helpful to the people going through the training - brain health!

So the next time online training comes up, push aside the fear that it could be not favorable by certain employees. Naturally, you want to do what is best for your employees. Technology is simply unavoidable these days and a necessity to complete business. Please recognize that at the end of the day, an online training could be beneficial to both the health of your employees and your company!

2. Save time

4. Flexibility
5. More Effective and Efficient Record Keeping

Online Orientation- Help Students Manage Money

When I think of Online Orientation I immediately assume orientation for new students. I envision an eager freshman or transfer student sitting through the orientation soaking up all of the information regarding their chosen college or University.

But what about specialized orientations for other subject areas – not just for general introductions to schools? Specifically, I can think of one for financial aid. Money matters can be overwhelming, confusing and can create horrific results if not managed correctly. That is why an online orientation can be useful. This orientation would target students on financial aid or with scholarships. As a young adult it is easy to mismanage money. Often people don’t learn the importance of managing their money correctly until it is too late. In a worst possible scenario, a student could end up depleting the loan, not turning in paperwork on time for renewal or not following guidelines to maintain the financial aid.

What if students could steer clear from these mishaps? Well, with online orientation money managing mistakes will be avoided. Online orientation for financial aid students can benefit students and financial aid personnel in the following ways:

· Raises awareness for students – Students don’t always read the fine print and can end up not understanding the guidelines of their financial aid – resulting in mismanagement.
· Brings sense of relief to staff – Staff can feel like their job has been done. 100% of financial aid students can be required to go through the orientation. Dealing with money matters in the correct way is really important for both staff and students.
· Allows for measurement of retention – Quizzes can be administered during the orientation to make sure students understand the information.
· Creates measurable student learning outcomes – Online orientation acknowledges all types of students and their learning preferences because it is audio and visually oriented.
· 24/7 access – Staff does not need to spend time administering an orientation and students can access the orientation at home, on their own time at their own pace.
· Permits multiple languages – The online orientation can be provided in multiple languages, ensuring each student understands the content.

Happy Training,

Greetings readers, this is AJ here! Thanks for checking out post number 2: The benefits of online training. We appreciate your interest! Last week Carrie did a great job to introduce her perspective of the company, but now it’s my turn. I’m going back to the basics - 5 benefits to online training:

1. Consistency- Online training provides a way for the training to be the same for everyone who goes through it. No longer will you need to worry about different trainers emphasizing a variety of points and your new employees receiving dissimilar training experiences. Now everyone will have a chance to process the same information provided in the same way.
2. Save Time- With online training, all you need is a computer. There is no need to spend valuable HR representative’s time presenting the same information over and over. Instead, online orientation can do just that while freeing up HR’s time and objectively monitoring new employee’s retention rate.
3. Save Money- No more traveling costs, no more printing costs, no need to hire an outside trainer to come in and perform the training for you. You don’t even have to make your employees go out of their way and miss work to get trained. They can simply sit through the training from any computer at any convenient time.
4. Flexibility- Online orientation should be available 24/7 so the employee can go through the training at their own pace at a time that works best for them.
5. More Effective and Efficient Record Keeping- With online orientation there is a simple way to track results instantly. This feature is a great function of online training and can be very valuable to employers. An example of how to track results would be offering an online quiz during the training to make sure employees are retaining the information. This also can give you insight on any areas you need to explain further or make clearer in your online training.

If the need is there, online training is a great tool that can help any organization run more effective and efficient training programs. If you would like further insight, or need clarification feel free to comment and we will be glad to help you out anyway we can. Also feel free to let us know any questions you would like to have answered in future blogs.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day.

First Days...

Hello readers! We are excited that you had a chance to check out our blog. Normally we will use this blog to try to help you with information on online training and orientation, but we thought it would be good to introduce our company and thought of no better way than from the perspective of our newest employee Carrie Peck. Enjoy reading on her first few days here with us:

GUILTY: I lack patience when bombarded with a sales call. Solicitors are the worst. The usual response I give when called by a solicitor is “sorry, she’s not available and won’t be in the future so please don’t call back.” If I received a response like that, it would be difficult not to take it personally. Having an outlook like this prior to my first day at Comevo made the thought of holding a lead generating position through cold calling a terrifying one.

All I could hope for before I made that first call was that the people I called were a bit more receptive than I usually am with sales people. To my advantage though, I make calls to people sitting at desks, not at a dinner table. Also, I am calling about a solution that directly affects the person and their job. Lastly, I believe in our solution: it is so much more than just software; in fact it is a service. Behind that service is a group of hardworking individuals who are loyal to their customers if those customers willing to take that first step and check out our services. These three factors helped lessen my fear before making that first call.

To my surprise, that first call was a home run! I spoke with a gentleman from a Community College in Kansas. He was the ideal candidate for our @school Online Orientation: a director looking for a fresh way to introduce students to his college. After the five minute conversation assessing his current orientation practice and letting him know about Comevo we scheduled a follow up demonstration (my ultimate goal)! This was a huge relief and gave me the courage to keep on calling!

Since then, I have encountered a variety of responses but my goal remains the same, I am here trying to help. That’s what it means to be a part of Comevo, to have the desire to provide a top rate online orientation and training service.

The position of lead generation lends variety to the job because you never know how someone will react. Each call is a brand new slate to work with. However if I have gained such confidence in our service after just three weeks on the job, think how strongly I will feel after six.
